Costume Design and Construction

Alice Neff has been designing and building costumes professionally for over 25 years. She earned her BFA in costume design and construction from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991.

In her costume design work, Alice begins with thorough historical research and script and character analysis.  She pursues costume designs that support the actors’ portrayal of the characters and that create a cohesive overall picture, beautiful or unsettling, as the play may require.  She is committed to flexible collaboration with the director and production team.

Alice has worked in a wide range of situations whose budgets for time, money, and personnel span the spectrum between lavish and meager.  She is committed to producing the best possible costumes without overtaxing those involved or going over budget.  She has worked with expert professional staff and with high school students who have never held a needle.  She has been pleased to hear students say that she is patient with them, and to hear producers say that the whole show was beautiful and that they were grateful for her calm demeanor.

Alice has designed and built costumes and designed makeup for academic and professional theatre, opera, ballet, and modern dance.   She currently manages the costume shop in the Theatre and Dance department at Appalachian State University and designs costumes for Horn in the West, a revolutionary war outdoor drama in Boone, NC.  She has also designed at Blowing Rock Stage Co., Ensemble Stage, Ballet Austin, Lees McRae College Summer Theatre, UT-Austin, Western Carolina University, the Denison University Dance Department, the ASU Opera Program, and University of the Cumberlands.  She has worked as a costume draper for Glimmerglass Opera and Flat Rock Playhouse, and in various technical capacities for Capitol City Playhouse, Zachary Scott Theatre Center, Live Oak Theatre and Ballet Austin.  She has designed costumes and makeup for an award-winning industrial high definition video produced at ASU, and she was a stitcher for Hallmark Productions’ miniseries “True Women”, starring Dana Delaney, AnnaBeth Gish, and Angelina Jolie.
